Sequence of bases in the
pAMP plasmid

The sequence below is read from left to right. The number in the left hand column is the base number (so the first base in the first row, "G," is base number 1, and the first base in the fourth row, "T," is base number 181). The bases are grouped in groups of 10 so you can keep track of what number base you're on. For example, to find the base number of the last base, you'd start from 4501, add ten to get to the second group (4511), ten to get to the third group (4521), ten to get to the fourth group (4531), and finally count over to the last base (A), and end up at 4539. Notice that the plasmid has been given an arbitrary starting point: there is a base number 1 even though the piece of DNA is circular. This allows anyone working with this plasmid to communicate with others about sequence information.
