Abstract. This study was undertaken in La Selva biological station in Costa Rica to examine the call frequency and intensity of Dendrobates pumilio in response to daily environmental patterns. D. pumilio calls establish territory and serve as an attractant for potential. Calling was found to be present throughout the day yet highly variable with respect to the environmental conditions. Calling was strongly positively correlated with the early hours of the day, high ambient moisture levels, and an absence of rain. Data from this study suggests that non-rainy periods in the morning with high ambient moisture levels create situations in which a high frequency of D. pumilio calls can be expected.
