South Dakota - Here we come!

The first field day we mapped Little Elk Creek Canyon.
Mary kicked it off by giving an introduction to the general geology of the area and
what people should be looking for in their mapping.

Cam knew what was up the trail so he explained how to take strike and dip readings...

and here he gives some one-on-one instruction.

We split up into teams to do the mapping; here Mary looks at the limestone with a team.

Later in the day, it was on to Bear Butte!!

At the summit, Bereket led a discussion about the emplacement and
geochemistry of the Bear Butte rhyolite.

Sara talked a bit about the land morphology, beautifully displayed in the distance

and Emily took it all in. Note the late afternoon shadow of Bear Butte on the plains in the distance.
The pieces of cloth on the pine tree are prayer cloths left by Plains Indians, to whom
Bear Butte is a sacred place.
