Among the things we learned that day were (1) don't back a minivan over a cactus, and (2) how to change a tire. Cactus spines are tough!

After several days we left the Mohave National Preserve and drove to Death Valley National Park. This is the view from Artist's Palette overlook. At right, Gabe and Annaliese check out one of the boulders which has slid across Racetrack Playa.

We did a mapping project the next day on Ubehebe Peak. At right, Cam led the charge, here checking out a rock.

The geology was right out there on top of Ubehebe Peak, and the views were gorgeous.

By the time we got back down for lunch, it was hot! Tim's thermometer measured the air temperature at 95 degrees and the ground surface at 112 degrees. And, no shade.

This is the view of the inside of Ubehebe Crater, where we stopped for a quick look-see.

That night we moved into the Shoshone Education And Research Station, visible in the background as Sarah, Tara and Annaliese go by on their morning run. We were to learn later that parking under the big Salt Cedar tree wasn't such a smart move.
