Approved for the Latin American Studies Major and Concentration Following is a list of courses regularly offered at Carleton
that may be counted toward the requirements for the Latin American Studies
major and concentration. Some of these courses are offered annually,
others only every other year. Occasionally, faculty will offer special
courses that can count toward the major or concentration, but that are
not part of the regular College curriculum. This often happens when
we have visiting faculty. If you are unsure whether such a course can
be counted toward the Program, please consult with the faculty member
or the Program Director. Courses focused on Latin America: Comparative and Latino Courses: Other Approved Courses offered in 2002-2003: AmSt 127: Introduction to Latina/o Studies [Latina/o group II] AmSt 129: Latina/o Popular Music in the Age of Globalization [Latina/o group II] AmSt 320: Diasporic Musical Cultures [Latina/o, group II] Econ 241: Technological Progress and Development [comparative, group II] Soan 251: Cultural Empowerment, Community Development and Social Change in Guatemala [group II] Posc 331: Urban Politics in Latin America [group II] Independent Study There are many topics in Latin American Studies that we
cannot cover in our courses, or that students may wish to pursue in
greater depth than is possible within the constraints of a single course.
Independent study within the Latin American Studies Program gives students
an opportunity to pursue such topics. Students may register for 1 to
6 credits of Independent Study as either Latin American Studies 291
or Latin American Studies 391. Independent Study credits may count toward
electives in the Major or Concentration. Students wishing to pursue independent study should consult with a faculty member, who must agree to serve as the supervisor for the study. The student and his/her supervisor design the course of study, and determine the appropriate level (LtAm 291 or LtAm 391) and amount of credit. |
