Requirements for the Concentration:

Concentrators complete 48 credits in approved coursework. In addition, concentrators must demonstrate Spanish Language competency by completing Spanish 204 or equivalent. Coursework includes two core courses, a senior seminar, and five supporting courses.

1. Core courses:
Concentrators must complete two of the following core courses:
Hist 170: Modern Latin America
Posc 221: Latin American Politics
Soan 250: Ethnography of Latin America
Span 242: Introduction to Latin American Literature

3. Supporting courses

Concentrators must complete 30 credits of supporting coursework in Latin American Studies. Supporting courses are divided into two groups.Group I includes courses in Arts and Literature. Group II includes courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences. (See the list of Regularly Offered Courses, p. 15.) Students must take at least two courses (12 credits) from each group. No more than three courses (18 credits) may be in the same discipline. The two courses taken in completion of the core course requirement cannot double-count as electives, but additional courses taken from the list in #1 (Core Courses) may count as electives. No more than 2 of the electives may be comparative or Laitnio in foucs. Up to 18 credits from approved non-Carleton off-campus study programs in Latin America may be applied to the Concentration.
