Majors are required to complete a total of 60 credits in approved courses. Thirty of these credits are in required courses. Students also must complete 6 credits of regular comps credit . In addition, majors must demonstrate competence in Spanish by completing Spanish 205 or by examination.

Students should plan to take the required survey course as early in their major as possible. Students are also encouraged to complete the other core courses, except the senior seminar, in their junior year.

1. Required Courses

Students must complete 5 required courses in the program. These are:

  • One Latin American survey course
    History 170: Modern Latin America or
    Political Science 221: Latin American Politics
  • One course on issues of development
    Economics 240: Economics of Developing Countries or
    Sociology/Anthropology 312: Actors and Issues in Contemporary Third World Development"
  • Two 300-level courses in Latin American Literature
  • A Senior Seminar (Latin American Studies 395)

2. Electives

Students must complete an additional 30 credits in electives. Up to 27 credits from approved non-Carleton off-campus programs in Latin America may count toward electives. No more than two of the electives may be comparative or Latino in focus. In the comparative courses, studentsare required to focus their major term paper or projects on Latin America.
